“Knowing how to get a job is as important as knowing how to do a job.”

We should be aware that there is no such thing as a “perfect” job, just as there is no such thing as the “perfect” candidate. Our aim should be to come as close to perfection as possible - and give yourself every possible edge when the time comes to get hired for that job.

“Job-hunters visit an average of six employers a month; determine to see at least two a day.”

If it is true that getting a good job is often a matter of "being in the right place at the right time" it is equally true that being in many places vastly increases your chances of being in the "right" place.

“Go after many different organizations in the field that interests you, instead of just one or two.”

A resume is more than a list of particulars relating to your job experience. It is an advertisement for yourself - a selling piece that has to - shout out to whoever reads it: "I am somebody who warrants your serious consideration. You'll be making a big mistake if you don't give me an interview."

“Many are called, but you are chosen.”

To improve your chances of being chosen, you should have a winning resume - something that will compel the hiring managers to take a second look!

The Final Test . . .

Show your resume to friends and people you respect; then evaluate their feedback and make adjustments appropriately. The ultimate test, however, for whether you have a good resume is to send it to employers. If it gets you job interviews, you have a winning resume!

REVIEWS

Hi Rey Misoles,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for giving me tips regarding resume and job hunting. Your tips really helped me in narrowing my choices. Your stories, especially about the subject applicant, was exceptionally striking to me. In fact, I fit the description – a job hunter in limbo who doesn't know his prey.

I have been looking for a job for the past 8 months. I mean submitting my resume to almost any job that qualifies me. And yet here I am still looking for a job! Tests are not my concern since I usually pass them. It’s the final interview that really hinders me in nailing the job. My answers are usually prompt and simple. No flowery words and no long story-telling. I was just thinking that maybe there is something wrong with me . . .
But it’s a relief to hear from you that sometimes it’s not my fault at all since they (Personnel Executives) have their own preconceived notions or personal bias about the applicants. After failing the interview I just console myself by saying that "it’s not my
loss but theirs," or is it?

One last thing, it crosses my mind on why are you giving us tips? I mean you only receive resumes and here you are giving us your precious time and thoughts. Perhaps you’re a bored rich man doing some altruistic behavior or some community outreach for the poor unfortunate young graduates.

Whatever is your purpose I really find your course very useful. Somehow I will repay your good deeds. Thank you once again and please update me with the work opportunities you mentioned in the course; I'm very much interested.
